100 Facts About Guinea Pigs – Part 1

Do you ever sit there and ask yourself a load of questions about Guinea Pigs? Well look no further, because I have gathered 100 interesting facts about our little furries and some might actually surprise you!


1. Guinea Pigs are rodents.

For the people who are unsure of what a rodent is, it’s a gnawing mammal. Other rodents include Rats, Mice, Squirrels, Hamsters, Chinchilla, Beavers and more!


2. Guinea Pigs have 4 incisors in the front and molars in the back.

Rodents are characterised and known by their continuously growing teeth. Guinea Pigs teeth need to be monitored regularly, because they can become overgrown very quickly, which may cause them too stop eating and will require surgery to fix.

My Guinea Pig Thor had overgrown molars and had to have surgery to correct this. Some things to look out for:

  1. Complete refusal to eat
  2. Lower appetite than normal
  3. Chewing difficulties
  4. Avoiding favourite soft food, hay and dry food
  5. drooling
  6. Oral odor
  7. Weight loss

3. Guinea Pigs have 4 toes on each front feet and 3 toes on the back feet.


4. Guinea Pigs don’t have Tails

Guinea Pigs are Cavies, which means their bodies are built differently than other rodents.

5. Guinea Pigs communicate with loads of different noises. Some include squeaks, purrs, chirps and more.

6. When Guinea Pigs get excited they jump in the air and do little twitchy movements.

7. Guinea Pigs are herd animals and prefer to be living with other Guinea Pigs.

Just be careful when pairing Guinea Pigs, because like us, each Guinea Pig has a different personality, which can lead to some dominance mismatching and not liking each other. I would personally get to know your Guinea Pig before trying to pair them with another.

My 3 boys Loki, Thor and Herbie live together. Loki and Thor were already bonded when they came into my life. Whereas Herbie was bonded with them at a later date. Their personalities are all different, which makes living together easy.

8. A male Guinea Pig is called a boar and a Female is called Sow.


9. Male Guinea Pigs have an area above their bum called the Greasegland

Grease glands can make a waxy substance and get all mucky, so it’s a good idea to clean their bums regularly if the Guinea Pig’s gland is gross.

10. Guinea Pigs are Herbivores, which means they eat some Plants, Veg and fruit.

11. Guinea Pigs can’t throw up.

All rodents don’t have a vomit reflex. If stuff comes out of their mouth it’s more than likely because it can’t go down the right way.


12. Guinea Pigs need to eat hay to thrive.


13. Young Guinea Pigs enjoy Alfalfa Hay and older Pigs enjoy Timothy Hay

15. Guinea Pigs are called Cavies

The cavy family is composed of rodents originally from South America.


16. Guinea Pigs are related to the worlds largest rodent – The Capybara.

17. The Average lifespan for a Guinea pig is normally 5-7 years, but some have lived up to 10 or even older!


18. Guinea Pigs are social and friendly and will love humans companionship.


19. Some Guinea Pigs can learn to do tricks.


20. Guinea pigs are not from New Guinea, nor are they pigs.
