100 Facts About Guinea Pigs – Part 3

Do you ever sit there and ask yourself a load of questions about Guinea Pigs? Well look no further, because I have gathered 100 interesting facts about our little furries and some might actually surprise you!

41. Sometimes Guinea Pigs lay flat with their feet out behind them. This is called pancaking.

I’m not sure about anyone else, but this is probably my favourite sleeping position for a guinea pig, only because you can see their little bums and you can tickle their feet.

42. Guinea Pigs yawn when they are relaxed.

Be warned, if your furries are anything like mine, you will have hours and hours long videos waiting for them to yawn! Then when they do, you get all excited.

43. Guinea Pigs will often make gentle chirps arms bubbly noises when they feel happy and comfortable.

I have personally never heard a Guinea Pig chirp before so the video below was sent to me for my own benefit and yours! Enjoy!

44. Guinea pigs have a crepuscular sleep schedule, meaning that they’re neither awake in the daytime nor awake in the nighttime, but are most active at dawn and dusk. Guinea pigs take short naps throughout the day and night!

During the night Lumi is most active. He will zoom around his cage, squeak and popcorn like he’s training for the piggy olympics!

45. A Guinea Pigs nap time works out to be about 4 hours of sleep per day.

It most defiantly feels like they sleep for 23 hours a day, more than 4!

46. Guinea pigs that are feeling dominant or that wish to mate with another guinea pig do a funny little dance combined with a chattering sound, and their hair will ruffle up a bit. This little ritual is called rumblestrutting.

My boys are always rumblestrutting.

47. Some guinea pigs have long hair, which can grow over their face so to help some people will put it in a little bow so they can see and keep it out of their food!

48. When you pick up a Guinea Pig you need to make sure you are supporting their bum, backs and not putting strain on their arms or armpits.

50. Guinea Pigs learn the sounds of your home very quickly and will respond to anything that sounds like a bag crinkle or a fridge opening.

Lumi is the worst for this. I open the fridge to get some milk out for my Tea and he’s there squeaking away. The others don’t really care, they just stare at you.

51. Veg and Fruit are great to give your pigs, for a number of reasons, but it’s not actually a requirement for their well-being. High quality hay and pellets are well suited for your Guinea Pigs needs.

Before I got Loki and Thor, I made sure to do as much research as possible. This is one of the reasons why I have Instagram – so that I could learn more about Pigs. One of the things I read was that Guinea Pigs should have 1 cup each of vegetables daily to help with vitamin C intake.

Herbie normally eats his 1 cup of veggies and then moves on to the others.

52. Guinea Pigs can pig out on their food and overeat on pellets, so be cautious of what you feed them and when. Hay on the other hand can’t ever be overeaten. No matter how much hay they eat, they will not gain weight or have any problems.

My boys absolutely love hay! Originally I purchased Timothy hay from Pets at Home, but I always found it very damp and didn’t go very far. Now I purchase Meadow Hay from a local Just For Pets shop, which is 2x the size, smells so fresh and will last days.

53. When Guinea Pigs have walked through their hay, they are more than likely going to never eat it. They are very picky!

My boys do this, but they love to sleep in it too! I got myself a hay rack, which holds the hay, so pigs can enjoy it without having to trample all over it first.

If you don’t wanna eat it, sleep in it.

54. Guinea Pigs can become bored if don’t have another Guinea Pig to play with, enough human interaction and toys to keep them busy.

I know a few Piggies, who like to live on their own and are more than happy with the toys and human interaction they get. One of those pigs is my own, Lumi.

55. Guinea Pigs like to hide in things like boxes, pigloos, houses etc!

My boys love to hide in things. They also really like to chew on boxes, so now whenever I get a delivery, I give them the box and they love it!

56. Guinea Pigs spines don’t bend like hamsters, so do not use a ball, wheel or harness on them.

Unfortunately some of these things still have Guinea Pigs featured on them, so people think it’s ok to buy them, when it’s not. All I will say is please do your research before anything new to your pig

57. The length of a Guinea Pig Pregnancy is 59-72 days.

58. Guinea Pigs give birth to 3-4 pups on average, but some have many more!

59. Guinea Pigs can become pregnant in as little as 15 hours after giving birth, so make sure there are no males around!

60. Guinea Pigs are sensitive to heat and are prone to heat stroke.

I always worry that my boys get too hot, especially in the summer. On warmer days I normally give them cold veggies, cool water and then on hot day as I freeze water bottle so they can snuggle up to them.
