Do you ever sit there and ask yourself a load of questions about Guinea Pigs? Well look no further, because I have gathered 100 interesting facts about our little furries and some might actually surprise you!

81. Guinea Pigs love to chew, so giving them something to gnaw along with their usual hay helps keep their teeth down and keep them entertained.

82. Guinea Pigs do not need a salt lick or mineral wheel like birds and other small mammals do.

83. Guinea Pigs can’t catch human viruses, but may be able to contract bacteria or fungal infections, like ringworm.
I am extremely lucky to say none of my boys have ever had ringworm. When I first got Herbie, I brought him home and realised he had lice, which he contacted from the Pet Shop I got him from. Luckily they paid for all of his treatment. Herbie has also had a fungal infection on his nose.

84. If you’re holding a Guinea Pig and they suddenly start backing up, they’re going to pee!
I’m very lucky with my boys, because they always tell me when they need the toilet, so I don’t get messed on. Even Lumi when he was a baby picked up quickly that he wanted to potty in his house and not on me (very thankful)
85. Some Guinea Pigs bite hair off of other Guinea Pigs. This is called barbering. They do this when they’re either showing dominance, or when done to themselves this could be a sign of stress or to relieve itchy skin. It is also just something babies do.

86. Guinea Pigs can get lice and mites, which will require treatment
Don’t worry we can’t catch this type of lice.

87. Guinea Pigs shouldn’t have dairy products.
In the shops you can actually purchase yoghurt drops which are advertised to be safe for piggies, but they really shouldn’t have them.

88. Guinea Pigs shouldn’t have a lot of seeds, nuts, corn or other foods that hamster may enjoy, only because they struggle to digest them.

I got these for my boys before I knew they struggled to digest them, so I soon switched to something less likely to cause them problems.
89. If you are struggling to give medicine to your Guinea Pig, them wrap them in a towel with their legs and arms tucked in. This will make it a lot easier.
90. Foods like broccoli can be gassy for pigs, which is kind of the same for us humans. So these are best fed occasionally.

91. Queen Elizabeth 1 had Guinea Pigs and can be seen in her paintings.

Lumi does this a lot.
93. You can build your own Guinea Pig Cage!

94. Many pre made cages you can get at the pet store aren’t alwsys big enough for pigs, so if you have to get one, make sure it’s the biggest one you can get.

95. Guinea Pigs will get to know their humans voices and their footsteps.
96. Veterinarians that specialise in Guinea Pigs are often referred to as an exotic vet.
